Saturday lunch at The Chimes: Fried Oysters, Red Beans and Rice Saturday, Sep 5 2009

fried oysters redbeansriceFamily birthdays are fun because we have an excuse to go out and eat.  Today for Sarah, on the occasion of her 52nd, we visited The Chimes just off LSU campus on Highland Road.

How utterly Louisianian: fried oysters and red beans and rice!  A fascinating combo for lunch!

Most Gulf Cost seafood restaurants pair fried seafood with French fries or baked potatoes.  The Chimes is the first place I’ve been where the red beans and rice is an option in lieu of the potatoes.  Pretty good idea, if you ask me.

We recall Rocky and Carlo’s combination of fried oysters with macaroni and cheese in Chalmette.  That’s the Italian influence, perhaps.   But oysters with red beans and rice: How Louisianian can you get?

And trust me, it was good!  I recommend fried oysters with red beans and rice at The Chimes to all my readers.Papa's girls

And of course, here’s to Sarah and Ann, my guests for this Saturday feast, and especially Sarah, who celebrated another year upon the face of the earth today.

Hooray!

Iconic LSU: Something about this place . . . Thursday, Sep 3 2009

LSU iconsNo matter what angle you visit LSU, the shadow of Tiger Stadium falls across your view.  It’s kind of magical, in a sense.  I got this shot today of the Memorial Tower with the Stadium in the background as I walked from Pleasant Hall (site of Ann’s student worker job) to the Student Center.  I was on campus for LSU Eunice business.

I remember my first visit to LSU during my senior high school year for some event I can’t recall.  I fell in love with the campus then–I felt like I “belonged” there somehow.  For whatever reason God obviously intended, I took my undergrad degree elsewhere, but every time I go to LSU now, and especially since Ann’s settled in there, I have those same “belonging” sensations I had almost 40 (Yikes!) years ago.

For the time being, I am confident that I belong at the LSU campus at Eunice, but down the road, who knows what God has prepared!  Hopefully, I will know when that time comes.

Meanwhile, “Geaux, Tigers!”  (Big season opener Saturday in Seattle!).

Payton goes to college Wednesday, Sep 2 2009

Honey picked up granddaughter Payton at her mom’s and dad’s this morning and brought the little doll to Eunice to spend the day with the grandfolks, arriving at home before I had to leave for work.  While Payton was munching her baby-breakfast in the high chair, Honey (Sarah) discovered she (Sarah) had a dentist’s appointment at 8:30.Payton and the fountain

Yikes!  Cancel the appointment?  What to do with Payton?

Papa calmly intervened: “Bring her to me at the office (at LSU Eunice).  She’ll be fine!”

So Honey delivered Payton to the Continuing Education Office right before 8:30, and Papa took over.  Payton and Papa visited the water fountain (a Payton favorite), the Acadian Center, Manuel Hall, and all points between outdoors.  As long as Papa kept the little squirt moving, she was delighted.

The fountain outside the Acadian Center is a Payton favorite.  She also liked the clock tower that chimed the half hour, although the sounding chimes scared her a little.

Papa was delighted with the experience.  Everyone he passed on campus adored the little girl.

Conclusion: Paytonsitting is better than work!
