All my life, I never paid much attention to the Kentucky Derby. Years ago, in fact, I was always annoyed when the race came on to disrupt the Saturday afternoon MLB game of the week, which I watched religiously in those days before MLB games were televised ad nauseam.
But thanks to some local friends who host an annual Derby party among family and friends, we had a chance last weekend to engage in some of the colorful pageantry of the race, mint juleps and all. There were no high-stakes betting–just friendly fellowship around watching the horses run on the big-screen TV. The horse race turned out to be more of an excuse to gather rather than a reason to gather.
I find that to be a good perspective!
